Silas Saxton Heston

On the 1930 U. S. Census of Keokuk, Lee Co., Iowa, Silas S. Heston appears with his wife Lorena and children Robert, Eber, Arthur, Dorothy and Gene. Also in the household is nephew Charles Kirkpatrick, age 17, who works as a salesman in a department store. Silas' father-in-law, William W. Kirkpatrick, age 80 and a widower also lives in the household. Silas and Robert are operators of a movie theater. Eber works as an operator of a power house.
A Kirkpatrick Genealogy... by Melvin Kirkpatrick and David Hudson, Page 161, shows Silas was born at Gardner, New York. There is no Gardner. New York but there is a Gardiner, Ulster Co., New York. In 1880 his parents were living in Ulster Co., New York, this was just one year before he was born.
Obituary provided by Keokuk Public Library, Keokuk, Iowa: Silas S. Heston, 92, 608 Concert died at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday at Graham Hospital. Born November 29, 1881,in Gardner, N.Y., he was the son of the late Dr. Eber H. and Emma H. Saxton Heston. He married Lorena L. Kirkpatrick Dec. 19, 1906 in Tecumseh, Nebraska, and she preceded him in death April 28, 1971. He moved to Keokuk 61 years ago. He was employed by the Baker dodge company which later became Frisina Theatres, for over 50 years before his retirement in 1964. He was a member of the First Christian Church. Survivors include four sons, Robert S., Eber W., Arthur P., and L. G. "Joe", all of Keokuk; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Dougherty of Keokuk; one brother, Eber H. of Reading, Mass.; one sister, Mrs. John (Ruth) Shaler of Monroe, Wisc.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death, besides his wife, by one daughter, Doris in 1927; and two brothers, Frank and Newton. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Schmidt Memorial Home with the Rev. R. Terry Halstead officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Hamilton.
