Nellie Verda Miller

Nellie Verda Miller was born 24 January 1891 in Henry County, Iowa. On 27 December 1911 she married Roy C. Payne, son of John D. Payne, who was born 22 June 1888 near Swedesburg, Iowa. After their marriage they settled on 100 acres purchased in Marion Township, Henry County, Iowa, where they built a house and farm buildings and continued to farm for may years.
Roy Payne attended Howes Academy in Mt Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa. On 1 July 1906 he joined the Finley Methodist Church and remained a lifelong member. in addition to farming, he taught the winter terms of school for a few years. In 1945 they sold the farm and purchased another of 226 acres in Marion Township, six miles northwest of Mount Pleasant. In 1954 they added an additional 80 acres. Roy raised cattle and pure bred Duroc hogs. with his son, John Dale, helping with the farming and livestock operation. Roy continued farming until 1965 when he sold the farm, retired and moved to Mount Pleasant. Nellie died in Mount Pleasant 13 December 1970 and Roy died 3 May 1971, also in Mount Pleasant. Both are buried in the Finley Cemetery.
There were seven (7) children born of the marriage.

Services were held for Mrs. Roy (Nellie) Payne on December 16, 10:00 a.m., at the Crane-Evart-Young Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Wilson, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Mrs. Ben Galer was the organist and Mr. Richard Murphy, the soloist. The following were bearers: Carl Seberg, Glen Seberg, Bernard Bates, Lester Peterson, Lester McGohan and Lester Wilson. Burial was at the Finley cemetery.
