Orville F. Coakley, 84, of Crawfordsville, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa. Born Dec. 24, 1916, in Washington, he was the son of Fred and Tessa B. Chenoweth Coakley. He married Merna Stone on Aug. 4, 1936, in Crown Point, Ind. Mr. Coakley was a lifetime resident of Washington County and lived in Crawfordsville for 51 years. He was a graduate of West Chester High School. He worked at the Exporter Elevator in West Chester and later at the Natural Gas Pipeline in Harter and Coakley Garage in West Chester. He farmed for 50 years, west of Crawfordsville. His farm was known as "the magic formula farm." Early in his farming years, he worked at the Washington County Road Maintenance Building. He loved tractor pulling and reading. After retiring, his hobbies included cleaning up the farm, building fence and cutting firewood. Survivors include his wife; one son, Jon Coakley of Washington; two daughters, Dorothy Wilson of Mount Pleasant and Martha Coakley of Iowa City; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today at Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Coakley will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Rick Dunn and Joan Erbe officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for Crawfordsville First Responders, the Arthritis Foundation and West Chester Heritage Association.
