James Francis Wayland

Wayland at his home on Pennsylvania avenue South last Saturday at 5:30, there passed from earth one more of the respected old pioneers of the Southwest. Funeral services were conducted for the deceased at the Geren-Leadinghous Chapel at 2 p.m. Sunday after, which interment was made in Mount Vista cemetery. Rev. Earl R. Kesting conducted the service. A mixed quartet sang a hymn and Miss Hazel Pietee sang a solo, "Face to Face." Mrs. Mayne Tweed was accompanist. The floral offerings were in abundance and great beauty. The deceased had been ill for a number of weeks, but had been critically ill only for a few days. Mr. Wayland was born in California in 1860. His father and mother, as children had migrated to California in the golden days of '49. They grew and were untied in marriage. To them were born a large family of children, four being born in California when the parental Wayland family moved to San Saba Texas in the early'70's. The deceased came to this part of New Mexico in 1884 bringing a bunch of cattle. He was followed later by his parents and brothers and sisters. The family first settled on the Sacramento and then moved to La Luz where they lived for a number of years. When Alamogordo was founded they moved to places just west of town which they later sold. In 1898 Mr. Wayland was married to Miss Fannie Chapman. The deceased was a stockman all his adult life. He was a kind neighbor and a man of excellent integrity. He is survived by his widow, a brother E. H. Wayland and two sisters, Mrs. R. Gouley and Miss Daisy Wayland of Hemet, California; a sister, Mrs. T. A. Frasier of Alamogordo; a sister, Mrs. Jennie Trailer, Medford, Ore.; and also a sister, Mrs. Dora Tipton of California.
