The Fresno Bee, Friday, Nov., 20, 1959: A. K. Wofford, Retired Forest Aide, Succumbs. Audie K. Wofford,78, of 1605 East Michigan Avenue, a veteran forester of the Sierra National Forest, died early today in a local hospital. He had been ill for several months. Wofford served the Sierra Forest from 1905 to 1942, first as a forest guard, then as a ranger and later as fire control assistant on the forest supervisor's staff. He lived in the North Fork, Madera County, area from 1894 until his retirement. He was born in Ellis County, Texas, and came to the San Joaquin Valley with his parents in a covered wagon when 4 years old. They farmed for a time north of the San Joaquin River before moving to a homestead near North Fork. Wofford attended the North Fork School until after the death of his father when he went to work in nearby sawmills, on ranches and on the first survey for the Friant-Bass Lake Railroad. After he entered the forest service his only leave of absence was in the winter of 1909-1910, when he filled in the gaps of his education by attending a business college in Fresno. He was the ranger of the North Fork district from 1906 to 1917 when he was appointed to the fire control position. He moved to Fresno after his retirement. Wofford is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ethel Wofford; two daughters Mrs. Eunice Lorentzen of Coarsegold, Madera County and Mrs. Eula Thorne of Bishop, Inyo County; five sisters, Mrs. Beulah Brown of O'Neals, Madera County; Mrs. Dona Price and Mrs. Lorena Mercer, both of Fresno; Mrs. Viola McKenzie of Albuquerque, NM, and Mrs. Elva Topham of Oakhurst, Madera County; two half brothers, Jack Peabody of Merced and Delmar Peabody of Santa Clara, and four grandchildren. The funeral arrangements will be announced by Stephens and Bean.
