Individual Details

Carroll A. Wilkinson

(4 Aug 1872 - Feb 1964)

Wilkinson was raised on Myrtle Grove, another large sugar plantation. His father owned two plantations, Myrtle Grove and Star. Because of a crevasse (a flood caused by breaks in the levees) the elder Wilkinson lost both sugar plantations. They were sold to Deer Range Planting Company and a cousin, Thee Wilkinson, was named manager, and Carroll Wilkinson's father was named overseer of Myrtle Grove. Thus Carroll's association with Myrtle Grove.

At about age 19, Carroll Wilkinson moved with his family to another relative's rice plantation at or near Jennings, Louisiana. Carroll was a good carpenter and builder.

Wilkinson met his wife-to-be, Winifred Hill, at church. In a romantic gesture he passed his fan to her after carefully inscribing his name on it. Though Wilkinson was in love with his young bride, his family did not always accept Winifred who was regarded by the Wilkinson family as a "Yankee".

There were five (5) children born of the marriage.

On the 1930 U. S. Census of Jennings, Jefferson David Parish, Louisiana, Carroll A. Wilkinson appears with his wife May W., sons Carroll Jr. and Willard. Also in the household is Carroll's mother-in-law Celia Hill age 78 and a widow. Carroll is a house carpenter.
