Wendel Dean Stevens

Blue Hill Leader, Blue Hill, Nebraska, February 6, 2008: Wendel D. Stevens, 1927-2008. Blue Hill---Blue Hill resident and former mayor, Wendel D. Stevens, 80, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008 at the Blue Hill Care Center.
Mr. Stevens was born Feb. 16, 1927 southeast of Blue Hill to Harvey and Blanche (Klein) Stevens. He attended "Comer" and "Cloverton" grade schools and graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1944.
On Aug. 2, 1945, he married Ruby Mohlman at Blue Hill. He farmed near Red Cloud until 1948, then farmed in Eden, Idaho until 1954.
While in Idaho he served in the National Guard from Dec. 29, 1949 until Feb. 19, 1951. He returned to the Red cloud farm after the death of his father. Wendel took a job with Farmland Industries in Hastings in 1963, retiring in 1991, and moved his family to Blue Hill in 1965 where he resided until his death.
He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Hill, serving on the city council for 20 years and as mayor for eight years. He was an EMT, served on the fire department, and was a member of the Commerce Club. He was also a board member on the Webster County Transportation board and was a driver for the Blue Hill Nursing Home and the Blue Hill Handi Bus.
He was a member of A. L. Shirley Post #176 Blue Hill American Legion. He was active in 4-H as a leader and on the Webster County 4-H Council.
He enjoyed helping people, serving his community and church, hunting, fishing, going to auctions and playing cards.
Survivors include wife Ruby Stevens of Blue Hill; children and spouses, Patrick (Joette) Stevens of Campbell, Linda (Leslie) Branting of Tecumseh, Jeffrey (Betty) Stevens of Buhl, Idaho and Marilyn (Bruce) Gerloff of Ayr; 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by his parents, son, Timothy L. Stevens; sister Marilyn Stevens and brother Carol Stevens.
Services were held Saturday, Feb. 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. James Witt officiating. Burial was in the Blue Hill Cemetery. Merten-Butler Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
