Jacksonville Daily Illinois Courier, Jacksonville, Illinois, Wednesday, August 9, 1911, Page 6, Cols. 6 & 7: Died Friday at 12 o'clock at Passavant hospital, after an illness of long duration, Mrs. Haddie V. Watt, aged 57 years, 7 months and [ ]. For some months Mrs. Watt has been in poor health, and over three weeks ago she was brought to the hospital in this city. for a time hopes were entertained for her recovery, but for the past week Mrs. Watt has been growing weaker. Her husband and daughter, Mrs. Lucy McCandless, of Canon City, Colo., have been at her bedside almost constantly, and Friday it was decided to remove her to her home in Winchester. Mrs. McCandless had departed for Winchester just before the end came to arrange for her removal. Mr. Watt was at the depot to see her off, and just after the train he was notified that his wife was rapidly sinking. Mrs. McCandless was reached at Concord and returned to this city on the afternoon train.
Mrs. Haddie V. Watt was born in Jacksonville Dec. 17, 1853. The was the daughter of Col. Jesse T. Newman and Esther Jane Gillham. Her father was the lieutenant colonel of the 10th Illinois volunteer infantry, and her family was one of the most prominent in this county. She attended the public schools of this city and was a student at the Illinois Female academy, now the Women's college. She was married to Robert W. Watt in Winchester, Ill, Feb. 4, 1877, and to this union were born four children. One son is dead and the following with the husband survived: Jesse David Watt of Fort Scott, Kas., Mrs. Lucy Devore McCandless of Canon City, Colo., and Mrs. Margaret N. King of Winchester. She is also survived by one brother, Herbert Newman of Ohio.
The husband is one of the prominent merchants of Winchester, and he and his wife were identified with every worthy cause that came before the people of that place. Mrs. Watt was a devoted member of the Methodist church in Winchester and was active department of its work. Every side of the social, religious and intellectual life of her home town was touched by this good woman and her influence was always along advanced lines. The finest tribute to her life and character is that paid to her by her friends and neighbors, among whom she has spent her life. The influence of her personality will be greatly missed, for it was most attractive. That she will live in spirit and will call others to higher and better things by her noble example of Christian living is already felt among those who knew her best.
The remains were removed to Gillham's parlors and prepared for burial and were taken overland to Winchester Saturday morning. The funeral will be held in Winchester Monday and the interment will be in the Cemetery at that place.
