James Wesley ("Wes") Kirkpatrick was born in 1852 in Chester County, South Carolina. He married on 25 September 1877 in Jefferson County, Alabama, to Elizabeth Green who was born 24 April 1853 in South Carolina, and died 14 August 1900 in Alabama. In 1883 Wesley purchased from S. B. Wilson 40 acres in Winston County, Alabama, and it may have been about this time that they moved to that county. Wesley died in 1929 in Winston County, Alabama. Both of them are buried in the Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery near Haleyville, Alabama.

There were eight (8) children born of the marriage.
