GEOLOGIST HOWARD `HOWDIE' KIRK DIES AT 89

Dallas Morning News, The (TX) - Saturday, March 4, 1989. Howard Manning "Howdie' Kirk, an exploratory geologist, died Thursday, Feb. 23, after a lengthy illness. He was 89. His remains were donated to University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Kirk was born May 9, 1899, in Bozeman, Mont. He was a veteran of World War I. Kirk attended Stanford University and received a degree in geology. He was the first geologist to conduct survey work in Afghanistan's Desert of Death.

He was a member and trustee of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and a member of the Dallas and Houston geological societies.

Kirk is survived by his wife, Mary Carter Kirk of Dallas; a daughter, Oleta Kirk Abrams of Berkeley, Calif.; and two sisters, Eleanor Kirk of Bozeman and Marguerite Kirk of Greenbrae, Calif.

Memorials may be made to the Carrollton Office of Aging or a charity of choice.
