Mary Elizabeth Michel

New Castle News, New Castle, Pennsylvania, Saturday, May 13, 1989, Page 3, Cols. 3 & 4: Mrs. Mary Michel Kirk,80, of Hamden, Conn., and Isle au Haut, Maine, formerly of New Castle, died on May 9, 1989, in the Medical Unit of the Whitney Center, Hamden, following an extended illness.
She was born in Darjeeling, India. Her parents were lay missionaries. Mrs. Kirk was a 1930 graduate of Mt. Holyoke College and later undertook graduate studies at the University of Chicago's School of Social Services. She was a long time resident of New York City where she was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club. In 1964, through the Union Settlement she developed the College Readiness Program primarily for Benjamin Franklin High School students in New York City. Now in its 25th year, more than 5000 students have been enabled to attend college. For this program she received special honors from Mt. Holyoke College.
Her husband, the Rev. William H. Kirk, survives. He is retired Headworker of Union Settlement.
Other survivors include three daughters, Nancy Kirk of Boston, Susan K. Semple of London, England, and Judy K. Fitzsimmons of Washington, D. C.; and 9 grandchildren.
A services was conducted yesterday at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, New Haven, Conn. Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Settlement, 237 E. 104th St., New York, N.Y., 10029.
