Discovery of another case of spinal meningitis in the Missouri Penitentiary, following the death Saturday night of Henry Kern, Newton county convict from the disease has caused prison officers and state board of health authorities to renew their efforts to stop the spread of the contagious malady.
Harold Kirkpatrick, serving a two year sentence from Lawrence county for forgery, is in the isolation ward at the prison hospital in dangerous condition. Another convict, Pete Severns, serving two years from Ozark county for grand larceny, is under observation. Physicians say he is expected of being a "carrier" of the disease.
Convicts who have come in contact with Kirkpatrick and Severns have been isolated in a special building. Meanwhile the quarantine against visitors and new convicts continues in force. Convicts whose time is up are being held several days for observation, and preventative measures continue for convicts and guards throughout the institution.
