Bertha Adella Basye

San Marino Tribune, San Marino, California, Thursday, June 8, 1944, Page 4, Col. 3: Noted Religious Leader Dies In South Pasadena. Death came Sunday at the age of 80 to Bertha Adell Layne, widow of M. E. Layne, religious leader and philanthropist at her home at 2035 Milan avenue in South Pasadena. Mrs. Layne was president of the Layne Foundation, a charitable institution providing help to the needy and also president of the board of Layne Memorial Church, Pasadena. Both institutions were created from bequests left by Mr. Layne.

Mrs. Layne founded recreation centers for servicemen, known as "Mother Layne Hospitality Centers, " in Arcadia and San Diego. She is survived by two sons, Ollyn A. Layne, Los Angeles, and Leslie A. Layne, Houston, Tex.

Prior to the time the time the late Frank Collins purchased the San Marino Tribune, he was associated with Mr. Layne in his great work and it was at the Layne's home in Alhambra that the noted evangelist, Raymond R. Ritchie of Houston, Tex., was healed of tuberculosis through prayer.
