Oscar was born 3 December 1846 at New California, Wisconsin, formerly a thriving community, but now a Grant County ghost town. He married first, 28 January 1870 in Wingville, Grant County, Wisconsin, to Mary E. Davis, daughter of John A. and Harriet Davis of Mineral Point, Wisconsin. She probably died between 1876 and 1879. A funeral expenditure is recorded in June 1881, paid for by Oscar and we presume it was an expense for his wife. On 6 January 1880, Oscar married a second time in Mifflin, Wisconsin Isabelle or Isadora ("Isa") Thomas, the daughter of George and Josephine (Noel) Thomas. His second wife was born 7 October 1862 in Grant County, Wisconsin. However, the 1880 Iowa County, Wisconsin census has an unexplained "Caroline R. Kirkpatrick", age 18 listed as the wife of Oscar. Is this a third wife who died very young? According to the Iowa County marriage records, however, he was already married to Isa Thomas. Who this Caroline is, is a mystery. Between 1893 and 1895 he moved to Minnesota. He is found in the 1900 census living in Stokes Township, Roseau County, Minnesota. Sometime after 1900 he moved to Athabasca, Alberta, Canada, where he died 1 March 1931. His wife died in Athabasca, 28 November 1926.

Three children were born of the first marriage, and eight children born of the second marriage.
