LaVerna was a clerk at the Children's Shop at the Alton Square shopping mall in Alton, Illinois.
Arthur worked as a shift foreman at the Shell Oil Refinery in Madison County, Illinois for 33 years. He was a self-employed photographer as well. He owned and operated the Hicks Studio and Camera Store in Alton for 23 years.

At the time of her death, she was 64 years, 3 months and 17 days old. She was survived by 2 daughters, Jean Clayton of Alton, and Patricia Cichlar of Hanover Park, Illinois; 1 step-daughter, Lucille Higgins of Edwardsville, Illinois; 1 step-son, Billie Gene; 10 grandchildren; 1 brother, Adam Deahl of Alton; and 2 sisters, Toleda Watkins and Luella Harlan, both of Alton. In addition to her parents, LaVerna was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, who passed away in 1975; and 1 son, Arthur Scott Hicks, Jr., who died when he was almost 2-years-old. Visitation was held from 3 to 9 p.m. on 14 Jun 1981 at Smith Funeral Home in Alton. Funeral services were conducted there at 10 a.m. the following morning.The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Cherry Street Baptist Church.
