Charles Joseph Kelly

Joe Kelly, Deming resident for the past 56 years, died in his home at 322 South Gold Avenue Monday afternoon following a brief illness. The end came one day before his 77th birthday, bringing to a close an active and colorful life. Words of praise were on the lips of all his friends who had known him so many years. "He was good man," expressed the feeling about Joe Kelly. Charles Joseph Kelly was born September 12, 1873 in Bloomington, Indiana. He came to Deming in 1894 and immediately went to work as secretary and bookkeeper for J. A. Mahoney, pioneer settler here. For the next 56 years Joe Kelly watched and in no small way, helped to guide the progress of the dusty little cow town to a thriving city of more than 5000 population. In 1902 Mr. Kelly met Miss Goldie Goldsby of Terrell, Texas, who was visiting some friends in Deming. They were married sometime later and lived a fruitful 48 years here.
Mr. Kelly was active in political circles in Deming and Luna County, having served as treasurer of this territory before statehood. He was a charter member of the Deming Rotary Club and also a charter member of the Old Timers Association organized in 1913. Mr. Kelly retired from his duties with Mahoney's only three years ago, leaving the heavy task of carrying on a business to the younger members of the organization. Survivors are Mrs. Joe Kelly, three daughters, Mrs. C. E. Sipple of Peoria, Illinois, Mrs. Ben Simkins, Hatch; and Mrs. Norman Flaska, Albuquerque; two granddaughters, Mary Elizabeth Sipple of Peoria; and Sallie Anne Simkins, Hatch; and one sister, Mrs. A. J. Veneman, of Evansville, Indiana. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 9:30 at the Holy Family Church, Mahoney's Funeral Home will be in charge. Burial will be in Mountainview Cemetery.
