Lexington Herald-Leader, Lexington, Kentucky, Thursday, May 7, 1987: Berea---Businesswoman Betty Cooper Hays died yesterday at Berea Hospital after a short illness. Mrs. Hays, of 411 Center Street, was 62. She was the owner and operator of Madison Lumber Co. at her death. Mrs. Hays had operated the business for about the past 25 years. She also was a former member of the Berea City Council. Also a registered nurse, Mrs. Hays worked with her husband, the late Dr. Earl T. Hays Jr., in his medical practice in Berea before she went into the lumber business. Mrs. Hays was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross. She was a Wayne County native and a member of Berea First Methodist Church. Survivors include two sisters, Jean Colbert and Nell Kennedy, both of Somerset; five nephews and a niece. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Reppert Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.
