Published in Tuscaloosa News on July 7, 2008: Tuscaloosa---Herbert Donald Hays (Don), age 85, of Tuscaloosa, died Sunday, July 6, 2008. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Christ Episcopal Church. Born December 7, 1922, in Berea, Kentucky, Don served as a pilot in the Air Force during World War II. His education was interrupted by the war; after the war he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and married Evelyn Frances Hibbard in 1946. He later did graduate work at the University of Michigan. Don and Evelyn came to Tuscaloosa in 1950 to the Department of Geology and Geography at The University of Alabama. He retired from the University in 1986, and during his tenure there he taught geology, geography, microclimatology, urban and regional planning, and air-photo interpretation. He collaborated on The Atlas of Alabama and traveled extensively to help determine where to drill for gas and oil. He was also associated with Dixie Air for many years. After the death of his first wife in 1975, he married Martha Hershberger Cade. He is survived by his second wife, Martha Hershberger Cade Hays; two daughters, Ann Hays Lilly (Albert) of Tuscaloosa and Allison Hays Jones (Don) of Decatur; three stepchildren, Nancy Cade Grimes (Warren) of San Antonio, Texas, A. Catlin Cade IV (Fran) of Birmingham, and Rick M. Cade (Susan) of Humble, Texas; grandchildren, Brett Jones, Tyler Jones, David Smith, Natalie Smith Strawser, Frances Cade, Anne Cade, A. Catlin Cade V, Frank Cade, Rick Cade, and Suzanne Cade McCorkle; and one great-grandchild. Don was an outdoorsman who enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, travel and gardening. He was an avid reader and an active member of Millwood, Tuscaloosa Rotary Club and Christ Episcopal Church.The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Christ Episcopal Church or Hospice of West Alabama.
