Robert Smith Vivion

Posted at findagrave.com: Robert Smith Vivion, 90, died at 1:42 p.m. Sunday at Lexington Country Place. A native of Powell County, he was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Georgia Engle Vivion. He was reared in the Log Lick and Kiddville communities in Clark County, attended grade school in a one-room school and graduated from Trapp High School in 1935, where he played basketball and baseball. For a brief time he was a surveyor for the Clark County Agricultural Office and then had a 17-year career in the grocery business with the A&P Company in Lexington and Winchester. He was named store manager in 1944 and received recognition for Outstanding Manager Performance in 1948. He left the company in 1952 to open his own grocery and was well-known for his sugar-cured country hams. In 1975 he was elected a Winchester City Commissioner, serving three terms, and he served as vice mayor from 1975 to 1978. He also owned several coin-operated laundries in Winchester and Lexington and a farm, Hollywood Springs, in Clark County. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 65 years, a charter member of the Owsley Class, chairman of the board of trustees, and was Sunday School superintendent for 12 years. He was a member of the Winchester Lions Club for 40 years, the Kiwanis Club and a charter member of Masonic Lodge No. 943. He also served on the board of the Winchester Chamber of Commerce and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1972 by Gov. Wendell Ford. Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Peggy Fraley Vivion of Winchester; a daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Dennis Williamson of Lexington; three granddaughters, Jennifer Williamson of Lexington, Amy Wargelin and her husband, Cliff, of Georgetown, and Rebecca Shaw and her husband, Colby, of Fort Wright; a great-grandson, Eli Miller Shaw of Fort Wright; a sister, Irene Woosley of Winchester; two nephews, James R. "Jim Bob" and his wife, Judy Woosley, and Don and his wife, Julia Woosley, all of Winchester; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. James Williams. Burial will be in the Winchester Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family members; honorary pallbearers will be Frank Vermillion, Dr. Robert L. Davis, Dr. John Collins, Kirby Roberts, Bill Anderson, Herb McComas, Snowden Berryman, Frank Bailey and Bill Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Miller Vivion. Visitation will be 6 to 8 tonight at Scobee Funeral Home with Masonic services at 8 p.m. today. Visitation also will be after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials may take the form of contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 204 S.
