Reinholdt Carl Ludwig Berndt

The Manitowoc Pilot, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Thursday, May 6, 1920, Page 1 Col. 5: Reinhold F. Berndt, an old settler of this city and a civil war veteran died Friday morning from a stroke of apoplexy. He was 84 years of age and was at work as usual Thursday at the Manitowoc Seating company's plant, where he had been employed as a cabinet maker for twelve years. In the evening he played a game of cards with a friend and after supper retired, as usual feeling well but a few hours later suffered a stroke of apoplexy which resulted in his death.

He was born June 7, 1936, in Germany and came to this country when twenty years old, taking up his residence at Cincinnati, Ohio. On March 31, 1861, he enlisted in Company C, 47th Ohio Infantry as a musician, and was discharged from the service four years later having attained the rank of sergeant of his company. He took part in many skirmishes and battles.

After the war he located to this city and had been a resident ever since. He was married twice, his first wife dying about twenty four years ago. He was married two years later to a Mrs. Mary Koepsel, who survives him, together with four children of the first marriage. They are Herman Berndt, Fon du Lac; Albert Berndt, Menasha; Mrs. Charles Dickerson, Spencer; Mrs. Michael Rusch, Marinette, and Miss Emma Berndt of this city.

He was a member of H. M. Walker Post, G. A. R, of which organization there are but nineteen comrades left of an original membership of 211. The funeral was held Monday afternoon. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery.
