Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Monday, April 4, 1927, Page 1, Col. 3: Mrs. M. Berndt, Pioneer, Dies At Age of 78. Mrs. Mary Berndt, aged 78, a lifelong resident of Manitowoc county, passes away at her home at 1026 South Thirteenth street yesterday morning after an illness of three weeks. Infirmities incident to old age together with complications which set in, were responsible for death.
Mrs. Berndt, nee Hemschmeyer*, was born in Hanover, Germany, April 19, 1849 and came to this country at the age of six months. She was married to August Koepsel on October 4, 1868 and six children all surviving, were born to them. They are Mrs. Mary Reinert of this city, Mrs. Emma Runkel of Chicago, August of Newton, John of this city, Henry to St. Paul, Minn., and William of this city.
Mr. Koepsel was taken by death and some years later Mrs. Koepsel married for the second time, her husband, Mr. Berndt, preceding her in death several years ago. By that marriage, five children were born, being, Mrs. Hulda Rusch of Marinette, Mrs. Bertha Dickerson of Spencer, Miss Emma Berndt of this city, Herman C. of Fond du Lac and Albert of Menasha.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 from the Reformed church, the Rev. Menke officiating and burial will take place at Evergreen.
