Florence V. Gifford

Waterloo Daily Courier, Waterloo, Iowa, Monday, January 7, 1957, Page 9, Col. 1: Mrs. Florence Fairhurst, 81, widow of the late I. J. D. Fairhurst, died at her home 320 Clay st., Saturday night. She had been a resident of Cedar Falls for 26 years, coming here from Manchester, Ia., with her family in 1930. Her husband, who died here Mar. 13, 1946, established the Holdfast Chain Co. that manufactured a special type of auto chain invented by Mr. Fairhurst. Before coming to Cedar Falls from Manchester the Fairhurst family had spent sometime operating a general store and hotel at Olin, Ia. Mrs. Fairhurst was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are three sons and two daughters. They include: Dorward and Ear, Cedar Falls; Benjamin, Red Oak; Mrs. Elsie Mershon, Cedar Falls, and Mrs. Arthur Biere, Rockford, Ill. There are also 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Dahl Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
