Vernon Daily Record, Vernon, Texas, August 23, 2000: Former Wilbarger County resident Gertrude Tirey, 81, of Graham, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Wichita Falls. Graveside funeral services will he at 10 a.m. Thursday at Wilbarger Memorial Park with Troy Chapman officiating. Arrangements are under direction of McMillan-Satterwhite Funeral Home of Graham. She was born July 27, 1919, in Kennedale, Texas. She was a home economics teacher for 33 years in Oklaunion, Paint Creek and Wichita Falls schools. She was a founder of the First Step and New Directions programs in Wichita Falls; a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, American Vocational Association, Texas Teachers Association, National Educators of America, National Historical Society; National Association for Mature People and Texas Home Economist Association. Surviving are a son Ron Tirey of Graham; a brother, Jasper Williams of Jolly; a sister, Helen Brown of Harrold; a granddaughter, two great-grandsons, three nieces and four nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Charles Tirey in 1970, and a son, Grover E. Tirey in 1965.
