The death of Z. L. Hodson occurred at his home east of the city shortly before noon on Thursday, Feb. 21, 1924. Zachariah L. Hodson was born at Salem, Iowa, Jan. 20, 1844. On March 19, 1867, he was married to Miss Margaret A. Lemmon, at Fairfield, Iowa. The couple came to Nebraska in 1883, and settled on a homestead four miles east of Gothenburg, whee the family continued to live without change. Three sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hodson, all of whom are living. They are G. E. Hodson of Gothenburg, R. L. Hodson of Mount Pleasant, Iowa and T. A. Hodson, who resided with the parents. The wife and mother died July 4, 1913. He leaves also two brothers, George Hodson of Salem, Iowa, and Adrian Hodson of Coatsfield, Neb.

When came the call for men of the North to bear arms in the civil war, he was one of the first to be ready, enlisting with company K, 19th Iowa Volunteers. He received his honorable discharge at the close of the war, and during the three years of his service fought for Northern principles as divined by the great Lincoln in some of the most important battles on Southern soil. He was a Corporal in his company, which went through the siege of Vicksburg and many other engagements. At one time, when his regiment was aboard a steamer in the Gulf of Mexico, most of the mules were put overboard to save the ship from the perils of a great storm. Mr. Hodson was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge of Gothenburg, and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Gothenburg, and a member of Thomas Martin Post, Grand Army of the Republic.

One more of the yearly diminishing little band of civil war veterans in Gothenburg has gone to receive the rewards of a faithful and Christian life. Close to the anniversaries of Father Washington and the blessed Lincoln, he has answered the summons to lay down the earthly life and rise to the glory of the eternal home prepared for the faithful of God, Washington and Lincoln. Funeral services were held Saturday forenoon at the home, conducted by Rev. Arthur Soundy and burial was made in Grandview cemetery. services at the grave were in charge of the Masonic lodge.
