Individual Details
Elza Lincoln Pendarvis
(18 Feb 1862 - 8 Mar 1940)
The victim was 77 years of age and had lived in Boone and vicinity most of his life. He had been employed in the brick yards, coal mines, and was also a teamster.
Apparently the aged man became confused and walked into the path of the westbound locomotive as it was slowing down for the depot. Railroad officials said it was traveling about 15 miles an hour.
Tom Paulson and J. O. Werntz, the engine crew from Clinton, said they did not see the man until the locomotive struck him. The train was immediately stopped.
Became Confused?
Witnesses reported Mr. Pendarvis was walking south on the west side of Story street. He evidently walked around the gates which had been lowered and as one witness put it, "he seemed to become mixed up and hesitated.: then stepped into the engine's path.
Immediately following the fatal accident, officials of the North Western began an investigation. They found the gates had been lowered at the crossing and the usual other precautions taken to protect both pedestrians and motorists. A member of the Pendarvis family said the victim was somewhat hard of hearing and this probably explains the fatal accident.
Mr. Pendarvis was preceded in death by his wife and one son. He leaves a number of survivors to whom the sympathy of their many friends is extended.
His four sons are Cleo, Fred and Howard Pendarvis, all of this city and Glen of Washington state. The daughters are Mrs. Clara Smith of Longview, Wash., and Mrs. Arthur Lemon of Los Angeles.
Four brothers and a sister also survive and are Charles Pendarvis of Boone, John Pendarvis of Ogden, Arthur Pendarvis, who resides in Wisconsin, and D. F. Pendarvis, who resides in Texas, and Mrs. Albert Lucas of this city.
Funeral services for Pendarvis will be held Monday at 3:30 from the Schroeder funeral home, with Rev. G. H. Sutton of Central church of Christ in charge. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery.
