John Kirkpatrick

John Kirkpatrick was born 14 Feb 1770 in Camden District, York County, SC and died near Glasgow in Jefferson County, IA, 23 Apr 1845. He is buried there in Gilmer Cemetery. He married abt. 1789 Jane Hope, daughter of John and Jane (Meek) Hope of the 96 Dist., Union Co., SC, where she was born 20 Jun 1774. She died 1 Jan 1858 at Berwick, Warren Co., Illinois. John made the claim that he was the only surviving child of Thomas in an endorsement of the pension application of Mrs. Margaret (Craig) Watson Kirkpatrick Dodds in 1843 (see entry for John's father, Thomas Kirkpatrick).*
John moved from South Carolina to Wilson County, TN, sometime between 1795 and 1798. Wilson county is just east of Nashville, TN. On 8 March 1802 John witnessed a deed from John Rhea to David Foster for 200 Acres on Stones River. John Kirkpatrick was taxed on 180 acres on Suggs Creek in 1803 and 1804. A Wilson county deed dated 29 Nov 1805 records John's purchase of a 180 acre tract of land near Stones River from William Nash of Rutherford County, TN. In 1806 he was taxed on this tract of land. In 1816 John bought an additional 150 acres on Stones River from William Nash who was still of Rutherford County. In 1819 he sold 322 acres on Stones River to William Hamilton, apparently in preparation for his move to Illinois. He bought 320 acres of Federal land in 1819 on the west side of the present Coffeen Lake in the south part of East Fork Township in Montgomery County, Illinois. Two of his sons, Thomas and Josiah, each bought an adjacent 80 acres. The land cost $2.00 per acre. He settled and farmed there on Hurricane Creek near Van Burensburg. About 1830 he moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, where he lived adjacent to his brother James who had bought land in Sangamon County in 1825. In 1839 he and his brother moved to Jefferson County, IA, where they both died within a few days of each other in 1845. Jane returned to Illinois and lived with her daughter Jane Meek Morse, in Warren County.
John was a Presbyterian affiliated with the Bullock's Creek church in York County, South Carolina. Later he was an Elder in the Suggs Creek Church near Stones River in Wison County in Tennessee. In 1823 the first Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Illinois was held at his house in Montgomery County, Illinois. Family correspondence indicates that he served in the military and that his wife ran the farm while he was away at war. This was possibly the War of 1812. Whether or not he was in the War of 1812, we do know that on 21 May 1832, he was commissioned First Lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Army, Illinois Mounted Volunteers for service in the Black Hawk War.
We think this John and a James Kirkpatrick, whom we believe to be brothers, are often confused in Madison County, Illinois, and in other areas with John and James Kirkpatrick, two brothers of another wing of the family.
