Herman Joseph Johnson

On the 1910 U. S. Census of Militia Dist. 5, Dist. 79, Tybee, Chatham Co., Georgia, Herman J. Johnson, age 25, born in Ohio appears with his wife Mabel, age 22, born in Wisconsin. They have a son Herman J., Jr. age 1 year, born in Georgia. Herman and Mabel have been married 3 years. Mabel is the mother of one, with that one living. Herman is a soldier in the U. S. Army at Ft. Screven.

Mabel and her son Herman sailed on the S.S. Merida from Cristobel, Canal Zone on November 6, 1919 and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 14, 1919.

On the 1920 U. S. Census of Camp Lewis, Pierce Co., Washington, Herman J. Johnson, born in Ohio, is a Sargeant in the U. S. Army. His family is not listed with him.

On September 16, 1927 Herman, Mabel and Herman, Jr. sailed on the S.S. Sonoma from San Francisco, California and arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii September 21, 1927.

On August 1, 1928 Mabel and her son Herman sailed from Honolulu, Hawaii aboard the S.S. Gambrai to San Francisco, California. Listed with them is Dorothy T. Cornett, age 20. She is also listed as being born at Ft. Screven, Ga. All three of them list Presidio in San Franciso as their address in the United States. Dorothy is Mabel's neice.

On the 1930 U. S. Census of The Presidio, San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California, Herman Johnson is a soldier in the U. S. Army, His wife Mabel works as a stenographer for the U.S. Army. Their son Herman is 20, born in Georgia and is an electrical engineer.

Obituary from the San Mateo Times & News Leader, April 2, 1945, page 11: San Carols, Apr. 2---Herman J. Johnson 59,of 1029 Elm street, retired army master sergeant, and resident of San Carols eight years, died Saturday night at Mills Memorial hospital following an illness of a year. He was a member of the San Carlos auxiliary police force, a wartime body, and of San Carlos Post 585, American Legion. He was a native of Ohio. Survivors are a widow, Mabel; son, Herman J. Johnson, Jr., and two granddaughters, Barbara and Betty Johnson, all of San Carlos, and a brother, Stewart Johnson of Leesburg, Ohio. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1:30 p. m. from Layng & Tinney chapel, Redwood City, followed by interment in Golden Gate National cemetery, San Bruno.
