On the 1930 U. S. Census of Sterling, Cayuga Co., New York, Leland K. Demarest appears with his wife Reta L. and son Roderick O. Leland is a mail carrier on a rural route. Leland was 27 when he married and Reta was 19.

Obituary from The Post-Standard, Syracuse, New York, April 13, 1982, Page B-2 (A): Sterling---Leland K. Demarest, 85, of Sterling, died Monday at the Syracuse Veterans Hospital after a long illness. Born in McGee on May 27, 1896, he was the son of Chalres and Cora King Demarest. He attended Fair Haven School and went into the well-drilling business with his father for many years. Demarest was a rural mail carrier out of Sterling and Cato post offices for 36 years, retiring in 1961. He was a avid hunter and fisherman all his life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and was a member of the George E. Ingersoll Legion Post 698 in Fair Haven for 63 years; he was a commander several times. He also was a member of the Fair Haven Presbyterian Church, the Sterling Silver Swingers and federal Rural Carriers' Retired Association. Surviving are his wife Florence Smith Demarest; a son, Roderick Demarest of Florida; two stepsons, George Smith of Oswego and Paul Smith of Fulton; two sisters, Mrs. Reva Martini of Stuart, Fla., and Mrs. Hildred Gauss of Holcomb; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Jewell Funeral Home, North Main Street, Red Creek, with the Rev. Gordon Wendell of Fair Haven Presbyterian Church and the Rev. William Howell of Victory officiating. Burial will be in Springbrook Cemetery, Fair Haven. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Fair Haven Ambulance Fund or the American Legion Post.
