Obituary from the Bay City Tribune, Matagorda Co., Texas, July 29, 2004: James Owen Cox, 63, of Selkirk Island passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2004 after a long battle with cancer. He was born September 12, 1940 in Kenedy, Texas to George Owen and Melba Yeater Cox. He was a hair stylist and, in later years, a rancher with a special love for animals. He is survived by: wife, Jane Matthes Cox; daughter, Tonya DeHart (Michael) of Franklin, Indiana; step-daughter, Karen Capak of Bay City; step-sons Kurt Smith of Bay City and Todd Smith of San Patricio; sisters, Dorothy Sykes (Jim) of Rockport and Sharon Morgan (Tom) of Weatherford; eleven grandchildren and special friend, David Hight of Selkirk Island. A memorial service will be held at his Selkirk home on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 10 a.m. Lunch to follow at Selkirk Fire Department. Donations may be sent to Hospice Support Care, 1905 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, Texas 77030.
