The State, Columbia, South Carolina, Saturday, January 8, 1910, Page 1: Visits Old Home On Sad Mission. Gen. Garlington, Inspector General of the Army, Goes to Newberry to Mother's Funeral. The State Bureau, 12 Post Building, Washington, Jan. 7. Gen. Ernest A. Garlington, Inspector General of the army, left here this afternoon for Newberry to attend the funeral of his mother. Gen. Garlington was appointed to the army from Georgia, his father, Gen. Albert C. Garlington, having moved from Newberry when he was a small boy, but he has always considered South Carolina his home, and his mother returned there some years ago. He often speaks to his friends here with pride and pleasure of Newberry, the home of his boyhood. He is the highest ranking officer in the army from South Carolina or Georgia and his position as Inspector General places him high up in the councils of the army. Zach McGhee
