Aaron Waverly "Pat" Old

Aaron Waverly 'Pat' Old died Tuesday, April 16, 2013. He passed away peacefully at home with his children by his side. Pat had recently celebrated his 101st birthday. He was born in Wawawai, Wash., on March 3, 1912. He was the only child of Marvin and Minnie (Swall) Old. Marvin Old owned the Wawawai store and ferry. They moved numerous times in the following years in Washington, Idaho and Montana. In 1917, the family moved to Montana to a farm north of Great Falls where Pat started school in a one-room country schoolhouse. He started High School in Clarkston and finished in Pomeroy, Wash., in 1932. He drove a school bus for the Pomeroy School District while he attended some additional courses. He was a charter member of the Pataha Valley Grange. In 1935, the family moved to a farm near Albion, Wash. Pat was 23 years old and had moved 23 times. During the next few years he farmed with his father and was an active member of the Pine Grove Grange in Albion. He joined the Washington State Guard and served for 5 1/2 years. In 1950, he married Leila Sturgis who was a teacher at Washington State College. He continued farming during this time while also working part time in several capacities at WSC. He became a member of the Pullman Toastmaster's Club and held all the offices at various times. Pat and Leila had three children between 1951 and 1955. Both Pat and Leila participated in many volunteer activities for the local schools and the Pullman Baptist Church in the 1960s and '70s. Pat semi-retired in 1981 when he and Leila took several tours in the U.S., to Europe, the Caribbean and Australia. Pat always enjoyed planting and harvesting a robust vegetable garden. He would go fishing as often as possible, sometimes just in his own small pond or the nearby river. Pat was preceded in death by Leila in 2004. He is survived by three children: Patricia Old Kasper, Richard Old and Kathleen Old. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Anne Kasper, Susan Kasper, Hannah Old and Patrick Old. The family will continue to reside at the family farm. A private graveside service will be held.
