Everett Okron Briggs

Fort Scott Tribune, Fort Scott, Kansas, Friday, January 6, 1967, Page 9, Col. 2: Everett Okbon Briggs, 81, retired postal employee, died at 2:06 p.m. yesterday at Mercy Hospital, where he had been a patient the past 11 days. Mr. Briggs was born near Lamar, Mo., on May 3, 1885. He was the son of Isaac Newton and Emma C. (Van Benthousen) Briggs. As a boy he came from Lamar to a farm near Devon, and at 15 he moved to the old Nelson place just south of the Country Club. He was married here to Miss Ethel Mae Scott on Jan. 21, 1904. He went to work for the Post Office in 1913 as a rural and city carrier, transferring to the finance department. He retired in 1964 due to ill health. He was also a Civil Service examiner for 15 years. Mr. Briggs was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a deacon for many years. He was active in the War Dads organization during World War II. He is survived by the wife and a daughter, Miss E. Opal Briggs, both of the home; three sons, Kenneth L., 423 National, Donald E., Chanute and Charles M., 502 1/2 Main; three brothers, Jesse C., De Soto, Mo., Virgil N. 754 Lowman and Philip, El Reno, Okla. and two sisters, Mrs. Mae Darling, 748 Holbrook, and Mrs. Ethel I. Ferguson, North Little Rock, Ark. There are four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Konantz Chapel Saturday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Herman Van Arsdale and Rev. J. W. Bays, interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
