Kalamazoo Gazette, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Thursday, September 6, 2012: Deceased Name: Harry M. Phelps, Delton, Passed away September 1, 2012. Harry was born January 15, 1926 in Denver, CO, the oldest son of Harry Sr. and Lenna (Burghart) Phelps. A veteran, Harry proudly served his country in WWII in the Pacific Theater as Marine Ground support for Nightfighter Squadron under Lt. Col. Black Mac Macgruder, Marshall Islands, Okinawa, China. Harry was honorably discharged as a Corporal. Harry worked all of his life, and with only a tenth grade education, he earned his way to plant manager for KVP Sutherland/Brown/Georgia Pacific/Multi-Color (Cincinnati). After retirement, Harry did maintenance work for the Delton laundromat and car wash. Harry was a member of VFW Post 422, Delton, American Legion Post 484, Hickory Corners, and Amvets Post 1988, Baldwin. Harry met the love of his life, Ilene Ritchie through his brother Jerry and they were married in 1947, and she preceded him in death in 2006. Harry is survived by his children, Patricia (Phil) Lazarus, Michael (Sue) Phelps and Brenda Phelps; nine grandchildren, Michelle Chatell, Kevin Phelps, Tony (Amanda) Lazarus, Brandy (Jon) Cornwell, Charles (Jennifer) Emerson, Brian (Kristin) Reed, Suzanne (Nate) Foster, Paul Phelps and Michael Phelps; twelve great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Harry was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Charles Phelps, Jerry Phelps and William Phelps. Harry's family will receive friends Thursday, 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the Williams-Gores Funeral Home, Delton. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, September 7, 2012 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, at 2:00 PM, Pastor Gerald Gallaway, officiating. Please meet at the cortege assembly area at 1:50 PM.
