On the 1870 U. S. Census of Osage Township, Bates Co., Missouri, Philip Briggs appears with his wife and children Edwin, Isaac, Emily, Arthur, William H., Walter and Elizabeth. Philip is a farmer.
On the 1880 U. S. Census of Osage Township, Bates Co., Missouri, Philip Briggs appears with his wife Elizabeth and children Edwina, Newton, Emily, A., William, J. Lillie, Cornelia, M. Effie and Orville. Philip and Newton are farming. J. Lillie is listed as an epileptic.
