On the 1930 U. S. Census of Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan, James D. Edgett appears with his wife Sella [sic], daughter Lucien and sister-in-law Dora Engle. James is a proprietor of a transfer line. Dora works as a clerk in an office.
The News-Sentinel, Fort Wayne, Indiana, November 3, 1992, Final Edition, Page 4A: James Edgett, 89, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Sunday at home. The Gladwin County, Mich., native served as president of North American Van Lines from 1947 to 1970, and was instrumental in moving the company from Cleveland to Fort Wayne in its early years. He began his career with a moving and storage partnership in 1923 in Berea, Ky. The business was destroyed by fire later that year and he moved to Battle Creek, Mich., where he established another moving company. That firm worked with North American Van Lines, beginning in 1938, and he was elected to the NAVL board in 1940. He retired as chief operating officer in 1970 and moved to Colon, Mich. He remained on the board of directors for several more years and served as president of NAVL Canada Ltd. While in Fort Wayne, he served on the board of directors of Indiana Institute of Technology, Fort Wayne Rotary Club, Taxpayers Research Association and Fort Wayne National Bank. He was named Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club in 1985. He was the widower of J. Margaret, who died in 1983. Surviving are his wife, Louise; a daughter, Barbara of Colon; a son, James D. II of Colon; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great- great-grandchild. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in Shaw-Estes Funeral Home, Battle Creek, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Preferred memorials are gifts to St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Battle Creek, Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte (Fla.) Shrine Club or a charity.
