Lexington Clipper-Herald, Lexington, Nebraska, April 1, 2004: Velma F. Hammond, 89, of Lexington died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at the Elwood Care Center in Elwood. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church in Lexington. Pastor Duane Russell will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington. Velma was born October 22, 1914, at Callaway to George and Minnie (Reed) Klein. She grew-up in the Callaway area until 1928 when the family moved to Lexington. On June 11, 1938 she married Leonard Reed in Norton, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 24, 1950. On February 14, 1959, she married Warren Hammond in Lexington. He preceded her in death on October 24, 1966. Velma worked as a Nurses Aid at Lexington Community Hospital for 14 years but due to failing health she was forced to work at home. She was very handy and loved flowers, working in her garden, crocheting, crossword puzzles, and sewing. She also loved raising birds and fish. She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Lexington. Survivors include one son and a daughter-in-law, Dennis and Nancy Reed; two daughters and sons-in-law: Marilynn and Art Sheldon and Kay and Bill Slater, all of Lexington; two sisters, Vera Brummet and Annetta Marsh, both of Lexington; one sister-in-law, Viva Klein of Lexington. Other survivors include nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and brothers Lawrence and Robert. Memorials are kindly suggested to the Evangelical Free Church or the Elwood Care Center.
