Funeral services for Frank Conca, 89, Mitchell county's final Spanish American war veteran who died Wednesday, June 26, were held in Osage Friday afternoon. The aged soldier and former Nashua resident died of a stroke at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital following a stroke earlier the same day.
As an honorary member of American Legion Post 278 of Osage, and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7920, he was buried at the St. Ansgar cemetery with military honors. The Memorial Squad of the Osage American Legion post was in charge.
Frank Conca was born November 27, 1877, in Teufen, Switzerland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Conca. He came to the United States when he was 16, after completing his education in his fatherland.
He settled first with his mother in Connecticut, and later came to Nashua. He entered the army at Fort Snelling in 1898, and spent three years in the Philippines. On receipt of his discharge he returned to Iowa.
Olive Helen Tracy and Frank Conca were married in 1901. He became a telegraph operator, working with the Illinois Central railway and later he served as a marketer for the onion and cabbage industries in the St. Ansgar area. During the years he lived in St. Ansgar he served as a lay pastor at Methodist church.
Mrs. Conca died in October 1932, when the family lived in St. Ansgar. He later returned to Nashua, and was married to Anna Dickman who preceded him in death in 1945. He was married to Maude Worden, who died in 1954, and for the past 14 years, Mr. Conca had made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Turner in Osage.
Surviving are his daughter grace, Mrs. Turner; one son, George Conca of Wanatchee [Wenatchee] , Wash.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Carl Conca, whose whereabouts is unknown.
He was preceded in death by his wives, his parents, one son, Otto H. Conca of Waterloo, and two half-brothers, Ernest and Otto Celotto.
