Posted at findagrave.com: WILLIAM O. MELLGREN, 82 of Escanaba, MI passed away on Wednesday April 20, 2016 at the Oscar G. Johnson V. A. Medical Center in Iron Mountain, MI. Bill was born on April 23, 1933 in Minneapolis, MN to the late Emil and Lela Mellgren.
On January 11, 1958 Bill married the former Janice Clason at the Little Brown Church in Wildwood.
Bill started his career in the United States Air Force in 1951. He served honorably for 20 years, retiring in 1971. He worked through the Polio Epidemic in a private hospital. Bill also worked in emergency rooms and psychiatric rooms while in the service. He had a sled dog team in Alaska that were trained to parachute off a plane. Bill and his family were stationed in Oslo, Norway for 3 years. Bill was a member of the Carney Free Church for 26 years. He was also involved in the Special Olympics. In his later years Bill assisted and counseled many servicemen throughout the area on how to receive their benefits at the V. A. Hospital.
Bill is survived by his wife: Janice; 2 sons: Gary (Wendy) and Scott (Gladys); daughter: Leslie (Kurt) Johnson; 13 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
Family and friends may call at the Carney Free Church on Thursday April 28, 2016 after 1:00 pm CST until time of Military Rites at 2:45 pm CST with a Funeral Service to follow with Pastor Bob Donaldson officiating. Burial will be in the Carney Free Church Cemetery.
