Posted at findagrave.com: Our Mom, Ruth Holm, peacefully passed into Heaven on Sunday, May 25, 2014. She was born on April 21, 1927, in Watson, OK, the second of ten children born to Lester and Ruel Dawson. Mom shared many fond memories of her childhood in Oklahoma. Mom, Auntie Opal and Grandpa Dawson would often sing on the radio and at many community events. Mom loved school and would tell us how she had won the spelling bee. In the spring of 1941, her family moved to Carlton, WA for a better life. She attended school in Carlton, where she met and married, our father, Albert Carey, with whom she had Joanne, Dennis and Kathy. When she found herself to be a single mother, Mom went into action. She enrolled in college and graduated with her LPN nursing degree in 1958. It was not easy, but she was strong and her focus was always taking care of her children. She retired in 1985, when she met and married Carl Holm. Carl passed away in September of 1991. Shortly after Carl's passing, Mom's best friend, Doris Roseberry "Rosie", moved next door to Mom, and those two nurses had such a great time together, going to the market, taking turns fixing their meals, going to the Senior Center and visiting off and on every day. Mom enjoyed singing with the Senior Singers and also liked to cook and sew. Christmas will not be the same without her molasses cookies, divinity, and her special potato casserole. We always had to be on the look-out on April Fool's Day, as she would always plan on just how she could pull a prank on us, her neighbors, her doctors or anyone she came into contact with. She would read or tell us stories, which included "where's my big toe" each night when we were young, and when our children were young. She so loved her granddaughters, April and Amy, and great-grandchildren, Gavin, Phillip, Matthew, Maggie and Ellie. Our family was so blessed to have Mom live with her granddaughter, April Moore, and her family for the past two and half years. April and her niece, Tammy Meyer, gave so much love and care to Mom - thank you, thank you!!! While living with April, she found a new appetite; she loved the family dinners, the big breakfast on Saturday morning fixed for Miss Ruth by her grandson-in-law, Michael, and all the family activities. She was spoiled, and for the first time in her life, she enjoyed being cared for and not being the caregiver. Mom never really liked dogs, but that changed too while living at April's; Bowe or "Baby Love" as she called him was a constant companion and comfort to her. Mom always shared her faith with us, but near the end, when asked if there was anything we could do for her, she would say "always love God," and "I'll see you again sometime." For this we are thankful and believe to be true
She is survived by her son, Dennis (Shirley) Carey; daughter, Kathy (Orv) Ochs; granddaughters, April (Michael) Moore and Amy (Damian) Eldred; great-grandchildren, Gavin Smetzler, Phillip Moore, Matthew Moore, Maggie Eldred and Ellie Eldred; her brother, Donnie (Frances) Dawson; and sister, Dora Dawson. She also left many nieces, nephews and cousins and their children. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Ruel Dawson; husband, Carl Holm; daughter, Joanne "Jody" Dauncey; brothers, R.L. Dawson and Henry Dawson; and her sisters, Opal Smith, Mary Jo Dawson, Helen Mabes, Mildred Dawson and Dorothy Dawson.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2014, at Evergreen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Mom requested memorial donations may be mailed to: Serve Wenatchee Valley, P.O. Box 5543, Wenatchee, WA 98807. Arrangements are in the care of Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
