Alice Mary Argersinger

Obituary from Banner Press, Ulysses, Nebraska, December 2, 1948: Ulysses---Mrs. A. H. Burge, 86, passed away at her home here on Thursday, Nov. 18, after a lingering illness. During the past several years she had been tenderly cared for by her daughters. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Ulysses Methodist church, with Rev. J. B. Brox officiating. Three hymns, "Nearer, My God to Thee, " He Leadeth Me" and "Abide with Me" were sung by Misses Margaret Smtih and Joan Thurston, Mrs. Ben Heard and Mrs. Ralph Stroman accompanied by Miss Georgia Woodruff at the piano. Frank Payne, Fred Vawter, Allen Withers, James Stephens, Leland Smith and Ed Schmidt were the pallbearers. Burial was in the Ulysses Township cemetery. Present at the funeral from elsewhere, besides the relatives were Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Day, Mrs. Bert Smith and Orin and Jerry Burge, Jr. of Lincoln., Mrs. Herman Schmidt and Mr. and Mrs. Clement Schmidt of Valparaiso, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Davis and Clarence Davis of Garland and Mr. and Mrs. Howard White of Shelby. Mary Alice Argersinger, the daughter of John Henry and Charity Argersinger, was born in Gloversville, New York, on June 6, 1862, and at time of her death was aged 86 years, 5 months and 12 days. When she was ten years of age the family moved to Iowa, where she spent her girlhood. In April 1879 she was united in marriage to Alfred H. Burge in New London, Iowa, and had she lived until next April they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Burge came to Nebraska in 1880 and lived on a farm near Dwight until retiring in 1931, when they moved to Ulysses. Two daughters were born to them, Mrs. Laura Edwards of Valparaiso and Mrs. Ethel Sheppard of Ulysses. Mrs. Burge was the last surviving member of her family, her parents, three brothers and one sister having preceded her in death. Besides her husband and daughters, she leaves two grandchildren, Mrs. Thelma Schmidt of Lincoln and Floyd Edwards of Dwight; one great-granddaughter Mrs. Ermal Edwards Collister of Lincoln; and two great-grandsons, Loren and Alan Schmidt of Lincoln. One grandson, Duane Shepard passed away 11 years ago. Mrs. Burge was baptized and reared in the United Presbyterian faith. Later she and her husband united with the Methodist church in Dwight and were transferred to the Ulysses Methodist church.
