Blue Valley Blade, Seward Co., Nebraska, Thursday, December 1, 1949, Page 4, Cols. 5-8: Alfred H. Burge was born in New London, Iowa, August 2nd, 1857. Departed this life Nov. 7, 1949, making a life span of 92 years, and three months. He was the second son of Jeremiah and Mary Ann Burge, who came to this community in 1881 with four boys and two girls. Securing farm land east of Ulysses, they lived on these farms and in Ulysses many years.
Mr. Burge was united in marriage with Alice Argersinger in New London, Iowa, and to them were born two daughters, Laura (Mrs. Harry Edwards, Valparaiso) and Ethel (Mrs. Ross Sheppard, Ulysses) who survive him.
Mrs. Alf Burge passed away Nov. 1948, preceding her husband in death by 11 months 8 days. There were three grandchildren: Thelma Edwards Schmitt of Lincoln; Floyd Edwards, Dwight and Duane Sheppard, who departed this life 13 years ago. There are also three great grandchildren: Mrs. Ermal Edwards, Collister & Loren and Alan Schmidt of Lincoln. Mr. Burge is also survived by one brother Jerry who lives at College View, Nebr.; two brothers, John and James and two sisters, Ella and Elvina preceded him in death several years ago.
Mr. Burge was a member of the Ulysses Masonic lodge; about 6 years ago he received a beautiful Masonic pin commemorating his 50 years as a member of the Masonic lodge. He was a member of the Methodist church and had served as a County Commissioner of Butler County from 1896 to 1904. He had lived in Lincoln and Seward before coming to Ulysses in 1909.
Mr. Burge was proud of being an "early settler" of these prairie plains and loved to recall and reminisce events with his old friends. He was a man of sterling character, his outstanding virtues were absolute trust in God, kindness and consideration for family and friends and Industry to carry his part wherever he could. So he leaves an honorable record to be remembered, cherished and followed those he leaves behind, and, while death is always sad and sorrowful the Good Book reminds us "What man liveth that shall not see Death?" and "If a Man die, shall he live again?" Into the Christian heart steals the words of Faith and Hope, "Let not your heart be troubled." "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." For God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain."
And so, after a long and useful life, we leave him in the Will of a merciful God.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, November 10, at the Methodist church, Rev. J. B. Brox of Silver Creek officiating.
