Lexington Herald-Leader, Lexington, Kentucky, September 9, 2003: Edward R. Hays, 90, of Lexington, passed away on Sunday, September 7, 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Hughes Hays and a brother, Earl F. Hays. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Jo Hays Carrico, of Richmond, and his son, Jim H. Hays, of Lexington; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Christine Hays Ellis, of Schenectady, New York, and two brothers, Russell Hays and Bruce Hays, both of McKee. Mr. Hays was born in McKee on May 7, 1913, a son of the late James R. Hays and Nell Russell Hays. He served as an FBI agent during World War II, with assignments in Salt Lake City, Washington, D.C., New York City, and Louisville. He practiced law for nearly 60 years, beginning in McKee in 1936, then in Pikeville with the firm of Baird & Hays, and, finally, in Lexington with the firm of Hays, Moss, & Lynn. Private graveside services are planned at the Lexington Cemetery.
