Arkansas City Traveler, July 29, 2004: Richard E. Brooks, 84, Arkansas City, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit. Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2004, in the Parker Cemetery with Pastor Robert L. Ferris officiating. Military honors were by Spencer-Ralston Post No. 1254 VFW with Commander Clyde Hatcher and Chaplain Tom Junkins. Color guards were Bob Baughman and Jimmie Simmons. Firing squad with Commander Darrell Rolland were Keith Crain, Marvin Tucker, Les Block and Larry Langhorst. Bugler was Alyce Harris. Born Dec. 6, 1919, in Wichita, he was the son of Lloyd Newton and Mae Blanche (Winters) Brooks. He was reared and educated in Winfield. He left school early to help care for his family after his father died at an early age. He was awarded an honorary diploma by the Winfield High School on May 21, 2001. Richard served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. On March 9, 1941, he married Patricia Anne Guy in Topeka. The couple made their home in Arkansas City, after the war. He worked as a self-employed painter for many years. Richard was a member of the Spencer-Ralston Post No. 1254 VFW and the Shelton Beaty Post No. 18 American Legion. Survivors include one son, Bill and his wife, Nancy Brooks; one daughter, Barbara Fortier, all of Arkansas City; one sister, Virginia Kinnison of Florida; a sister-in-law, Joan Guy-Anderson of Topeka; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on June 2, 2004; three brothers, William, Everett and Wallace; two sisters, Clara Gray and Neva Bays.
