Obituary from the Beaufort Gazette, Feb. 21, 2003: Ret. Army Col. James E. Cornwell, 78, husband of Barbara Anderson Cornwell, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
The Charlotte Observer, Charlotte, North Carolina, February 21, 2003: James Ely (Bud) Cornwell, of Fripp Island, SC (formerly of Charlotte, NC), died Wednesday, February 19, 2003. Born July 15, 1924 in Chester, SC to John and Virginia Cornwell, Bud is survived by his son Judge Jim Cornwell and wife Dana of Clarksville, GA, and his daughter, Sinclair Little and husband, Jack, of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kate and Ely Cornwell and Ely, Simpson and Jack Bennette Little. Mr. Cornwell was preceded in death by his brother, John Bennette Cornwell of Spartanburg. He is survived by John's children, Bennette of Greenville, SC, Mike Cornwell of Greensboro, NC and Pam Bartenfield of Sullivan's Island, SC.
Bud attended Clemson University and served in active duty during WW II in the US Army. He flew B-29's in the Chinese/Indian Theatre and the Pacific Theatre and served in the Army Reserve for 20 years. He married Jeanne Simpson of Florence SC in 1949 and they had two children, Jim and Sinclair. Jeanne preceded him in death in 1981. He married Barbara Anderson in 1990 and has resided at Fripp Island.
Bud's career with Exxon spanned 30 years before his retirement in 1984. He was awarded the Distinguished Salesman of the Year Award several years for outstanding salesmanship. His work with Exxon took him to Florence and Columbia SC and to Hickory, Greensboro and Charlotte, NC. He was an active member of the Episcopal Church and a member of the Kiwanis Club. Bud passionately loved his family, his friends, Clemson University, the beach and fishing. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh--his sense of humor was infectious. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, as well as a good friend to many. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service was held on Friday, February 21 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence, SC at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the home of Sinclair and Jack Little at 609 Cherokee Road today (Sunday), February 23 from 5-7PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society at 500 E. Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28202 or the American Heart Association at 1229 Greenwood Cliff, Charlotte, NC 28204. Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
