John Bennette Cornwell, Jr. was born 17 May 1922. On 1 September 1945 he married Jeanne Harby of Sumter, Sumter County, South Carolina. She died on 6 May 1977.

The State, Columbia, South Carolina, January 5, 1999: SPARTANBURG - Services for John Bennette Cornwell Jr., 76, of 56 Lake Forest Drive, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Dr. Todd B. Jones, Dr. George L. McGill and Rev. Ansley G. Belcher will officiate. The family will be at the home. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mary Black Foundation, Inc., 945 E. Main St., Spartanburg 29302 or Purnell Fund of First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg 29302.

Mr. Cornwell died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at his home. Born in Chester, he was the husband of the late Lelia Panell Page Cornwell and a son of the late John Bennette and Virginia Stone Cornwell. He was a former member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, where he was past president of the E. Gibson Davis Sunday School Class and presently a member of First Presbyterian Church and former vice president of the Men's Bible Class. He served as rifle company commander (Company B) 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division in Normandy, Belgium and Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters and awarded the Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He held managerial positions with Reeves Bros. He retired in 1984 while manager of marketing administration of Philips Fibers, Inc. He was a 1943 graduate of Clemson University and served as president of Spartanburg County Clemson Iptay Club. He also was a Clemson Iptay representative and was a member of the Clemson National Alumni Council. He was a volunteer and member of Mary Black Memorial Hospital Auxiliary since 1983 and was past president of Spartanburg Cotillion Club. He was former director of Spartanburg Country Club, former member of Bessemer City Lions Club.

Surviving are his sons, John Bennette Cornwell III of Greenville, Michael Harby Cornwell of Greensboro, N.C.; daughter, Pamela Jeanne Cornwell Bartenfield of Seabrook Island; stepsons, Edward Ervin "Ned" Page of Spartanburg and Harold Dean "Pete" Page Jr. of Isle of Palms; brother, James E. Cornwell of Fripp Island; four grandchildren; three step- grandchildren. He was first married to the late Jeanne Harby Cornwell.
