David Edgar Aiken Sr.

AIKEN, 71, IN FAIRFIELD .WINNSBORO (Special) -- David Edgar Aiken, 71, died at 12 o’clock Saturday at Oteen Hospital in Asheville, N.C., where he had been a patient for eight years. He was born at Monticello in western Fairfield, son of the late J. H. and Sallie E. Aiken and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Salem Presbyterian Church and a former deacon of the church. He was a farmer and merchant before his health failed. Mr. Aiken was a member of the famous Rainbow Division in World War I, the 117th Engineers, and was a Legionnaire. He was twice married, first to the late Mamie Kilpatrick. They had one son, David Edgar, Jr. who was killed in action in France in World War II, where his father had fought in World War I. His second wife is Mrs. Bertha Mae Blair Martin (Aiken) of Strother. Besides his wife, survivors include two brothers, Wade M. Aiken of Winnsboro and William Douglas Aiken of Strother; two step-daughters, Mrs. Paul Ramsing of Strother and Mrs. Bobby Scarborough of Charleston; and two step-sons, Blair Martin of Clemson College and Milo Martin of the U. S. Army, overseas, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday from Salem Presbyterian Church in western Fairfield County by the Rev. Robert W. Wallace. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body will be at the Harden Funeral Home. (Obituary kindly supplied by Anna O'Quinn Richter.)
