Odebolt News, Odebolt, Iowa, March 8, 2008: Marie (Hosier) Noll. Marie Noll, age 89, of Arthur, Iowa, died Monday, February 25, 2008, at Morningside Rehab & Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa. Funeral services were held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the United Methodist Church in Arthur, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. Born April 12, 1918, on her grandparents' farm near Rolfe, Iowa, Marie Jessie Hosier Noll was the daughter of Jesse O. and Minnie M. (Ives) Hosier. At the age of 21 months, she moved with her parents to Perkins County, South Dakota, where the family homesteaded and lived in a sod house. Due to drought, grasshoppers, and sickness, the family returned to the Rolfe area three years later. Marie attended Garfield #3 school (the same school attended by her mother) for eight years with Miss Alletta Grant as her teacher. She graduated from Normal Training at Rolfe High School in 1935. Marie was a member of the Rolfe Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of the Garfield Go-Getters 4-H Club. She taught country schools in Pocahontas County for two years before graduating from a two-year elementary course at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1940. Marie taught in Arthur and Rockwell City before her marriage to Darrell J. Noll on February 23, 1947, at the Rolfe Presbyterian Church. Four daughters were born to this union. The Noll's farmed the home place and Marie was a homemaker and was involved in community and church activities. She was a member of the Arthur United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, in the church choir, and as a member and officer of the United Methodist Women. She co-founded the Blaine Shamrocks 4-H club and served as leader for 19 years. She also was a member of the School Boosters, Arthur Woman's Club of Friendly Neighbors, and the Ida County Historical Society. She began the old-fashioned country school program and was one of its teachers. In 1981, the Noll's moved into Arthur where they continued their many interests. They enjoyed traveling and visited all the states plus Canada. Darrell died in 1995. In her retirement years, quilting became one of Marie's most enjoyable hobbies. Visiting her children and grandchildren was one of her joys as well as entertaining her friends and neighbors. Her church and family were her greatest pleasures. Survivors include her four children, Elizabeth Noll Walstrom and fiancé Greg Sery of Spring Lake Park, MN, Catherine (William) Litwinow of Bettendorf, Barbara (Alan) Piper of Greenfield, and Margaret Noll of Omaha, NE; five grandchildren, Jeff Walstrom, Mark Litwinow, Mark Piper and fiancee Kenzie Stroud, Juliana (Lucas) Frank, and Luke Piper; two great-grandchildren, Kaden Frank and Hannah Frank; and a brother, Richard Hosier of Seattle, WA. In addition to her husband, Marie was preceded in death by her parents. Memorials may be directed to Arthur United Methodist Church, Ida County Historical Society, and Ida County 4-H.
