Smith, 94, Dubuque, Iowa, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque. He was born June 12, 1912 in Carthage, the son of Russell N. and Jesse (Kirkpatrick) Smith. He married Wilma Maxine White on June 25, 1938, in Lancaster, Mo. She preceded him in death Nov. 22, 1996. He is survived by one daughter, Janice (Sidney W.) Scott, Dubuque; three grandchildren, Britain Scott (Russ Lake) and Erin Scott, Minneapolis, Minne., and Ryan Scott, Dubuque; one great-granddaughter, Maren Elkins, Minneapolis, and an expected great-great-grandchild; one brother, Neil Smith, Cape Coral, Fla.; and three nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Kirk and Dick. He led a full and remarkable life, and to those who knew him, he was known as a well-balanced man of many interests, talents and great stories. Having well-educated parents who exposed him to literature, opera and art during an idyllic childhood complete with his own pony, his dogs, Caruso records, poetry, art, hunting, fishing, swimming, football, Native American lore and anything related to nature. Scouting led him to become a true renaissance man, very much at peace with his existence. He attended Carthage College, his parents alma mater, and was forced to leave before earning his degree during the Great Depression. Along with his brother, Kirk, he opened one of the first Maid-Rite sandwich shops in Colchester in the 1930s. There he met Maxine. After he and Maxine were married, they moved to Peoria where he worked for Caterpiller Tractor Company as a machinist. When World War II began, he and Maxine, along with close friends, left Peoria and moved to Omaha to help the war effort building B26 bombers at the Martin plant. His beloved daughter, Janice Elaine was born there. After the end of the war, he returned to Caterpillar, working there until retirement in 1974.
Among his many interest were studying and discussing the Bible, boating, photography, fishing, figure skating, modern dance, auto and horse racing, painting and drawing, genealogy, all types of competitive sports, walking with the family dog, Nessie, reading and analyzing poetry and designing practical solutions to many of life's vexing problems. Cremation rites have been accorded. Graveside services for immediate family will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 25, 2007 in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Colchester. Burial of his and his wife's ashes and wedding rings, as was their wishes, will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Colchester. Jones Mortuary, Colchester, is in charge of arrangements.
