On the 1910 U. S. Census of Carthage, Hancock Co., Illinois, Russell Smith appears with his wife Jessie M. and son Russell K. Also in the household is the elder Russell's sister Elizabeth B. Smith age 13. Russell works in retail merchandise repair and parts. They are listed on the census right after Jessie's parents.
Social Security Death Index shows that Russell died while a resident of Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois. Information from Neil C. Smith indicates that he died at Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona while on a visit to his step-son of his second marriage to the widow Nettie Davis.

Smith, 84, Macomb, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Wesley United Methodist Church, Macomb, with the Rev. Orval Bear and the Rev. DeWitt C. Ellinwood officiating. Burial was in Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage. Mr. Smith died Saturday morning, June 14, 1969, in Phoenix, Ariz., while visiting a stepson. He was born May 10, 1885, at Avon. He was a graduate of the university of Illinois, worked for the YMCA, was a feed salesman and appliance dealer before he retired. He operated a paint and wallpaper store in Carthage several years ago. He married Jessie Kirkpatrick who died in 1946. He later married Nettie Davis.
Surviving with his wife are three sons, Hugh of Peoria, Neil and R. Kirk of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two step-sons, Norman and Wallace Davis of Phoenix, Ariz.; one step daughter, Mrs. Marion Davis Dobbs, Macomb; one sister, Dr. Elizabeth Wright of Downey, Calif.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild, seven step-grandchildren and one step-great grandchild. A son Richard, was killed in action in World War II.
