George was a veteran of the Civil War. His rank was private, with Co. H, 69th Regiment, from Illinois, and was with the Infantry. From his G. A. R. membership record.
Nashua Reporter, Nashua, Iowa, Thursday, October 10, 1912, Front Page, Col. 3: G. W. Tracy Answers Final Summons. George W. Tracy, one of Nashua's oldest and most highly respected citizens, passed away at his home early Sunday morning. Mr. Tracy had been in poor health for a number of years and last spring his condition became so serious it was thought the end was near, but he rallied and was able to be up and around again, in company with his wife, visiting their daughters at Minneapolis and Peosta. About three weeks ago he was taken worse again and gradually failed until death came to his relief. Besides his faithful wife, one daughter, Mrs. J. W. Leaman of Minneapolis, and one son, John, were with him when the end came. Another son, Thomas of Minot, N. Dak., was unable to come on account of poor health, having recently been operated upon for appendicitis, and the other daughter, Mrs. Frank Conca, of Peosta, was also unable to be here on account of sickness. Otto, the son who lives in Texas, came Tuesday for the funeral. Deceased was 67 years, 4 months and 2 days old and had lived in Nashua and vicinity for many years. He was a man who made the held the closest friendship of all with whom he became acquainted. The funeral will be held this afternoon at the Methodist church conducted by Rev. Kirwin and burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery. The Grand Army Post of which deceased was a past commander will have charge of the service. By request of the family the obituary notice will not be published until next week.
